All of us have experienced tragedy and difficulties in our lives.  One problem can lead to a major crisis: the loss of your transportation, home, job, divorce, loss of a loved one, even domestic violence. A mental or physical health issue can result in an extended hospital and/or rehabilitation stay. These are just a few of the many reasons that people and their pets need the help of the Whole Families Program (WFP).

People participating in our WFP are facing a major crisis in their life and some of them need us to care for their pets while they resolve the issues in their life that could lead to the surrender of their beloved pet.  People and their pets form a lasting bond and keeping them together is imperative for their physical and mental health.

YOU can keep them together! 

We need foster homes located throughout New Jersey that are able to take a pet and care for them for one (1) to six (6) months* until their pet parent is able to take them back. 

PFA will provide pet food, supplies, and veterinary care while you provide a loving home and attention.

  • Fostering is a 24/7 responsibility and durations can vary, lasting for months at a time, depending on the animal’s situation. Serious inquiries only, please.

Dogs & Cats in Need of Foster Homes

The urgent need for assistance in our community has reached unprecedented levels, with an alarming rise in families who have lost their homes and are now living in their cars alongside their beloved pets. 

May 2026 Update

Over the past two weeks, our hearts have been heavy as we’ve had to turn away 11 courageous women in crisis, along with their beloved companions – 11 dogs and 4 cats – simply because we didn’t have enough foster homes available in our Whole Families Program.

Our Whole Families Participants are remarkable survivors, bravely navigating the tumultuous waters of domestic violence, homelessness, and health crises. They turn to us, seeking not just safety for their cherished companion animals, but also a lifeline as they work to reclaim their lives from the shadows of uncertainty. At PFA, we stand ready to say “yes” to their plea for help, ensuring that their fur babies are not only safe but also showered with love and care during their journey towards stability and permanent housing. Together, we can transform despair into hope, one wagging tail at a time.

People for Animals will provide comprehensive support, including veterinary care, vaccinations, pet food, and supplies for every pet in our foster care program.

Gunter and Miska

Meet Gunter, an 11-year-old distinguished gentleman with a heart as warm as his fluffy fur! This charming feline has spent his entire life alongside his beloved companion Miska, creating an unbreakable bond that speaks volumes about the love they share. Gunter is not just any cat; he’s a playful spirit who enjoys a game of fetch with his cherished toys. His snuggles are legendary, bringing comfort and joy not only to his human friends but also to his canine buddy Miska. Gunter is on the lookout for a foster home that will provide him the safety and affection he deserves until he can be reunited with Miska and their loving mom.

Meet Miska, the 11-year-old Husky with a heart as big as her love for her feline friend, Gunter! This sweet lady is not just a beauty, but also a gentle soul who gets along famously with other pets and people of all ages. Imagine taking leisurely walks with this delightful companion, who may not be the loudest Husky on the block, but certainly knows how to make her presence known with playful grumbles and charming noises! Miska does have a little secret – she takes daily medication in peanut butter to keep her bladder happy and prevent any accidents at home. Now, she’s on a heartfelt quest for a foster home filled with love and warmth, where she can be cared for until she can reunite with Gunter and their cherished mom.

Jane

Jane, a spirited 4-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, and her devoted mom are currently facing the heartbreaking challenge of homelessness after a car accident led to the loss of her job. This difficult situation has placed immense strain on their lives, but Jane’s mom is working tirelessly to secure stable housing for them both. Jane’s loving and loyal nature shines through as she greets everyone with enthusiasm, showing her friendly disposition towards people, children, dogs, and even cats. Her playful spirit is evident in her love for fetch, and she impressively knows all her toys by name. Additionally, Jane walks well on a leash and is trained to use potty pads when her mom is at work, showcasing her intelligence and adaptability.

Lilly

Lilly, her mom and her 4 human siblings were evicted from their home through no fault of their own. They are now living in a motel and in order to enter a shelter the family needs Lilly to find a safe place to stay. Lilly is a delightful 5-year-old pit mix who embodies the essence of love and companionship! With a heart that thrives on human connection, Lilly is not just a pet; she’s the perfect addition to any nurturing environment. This sweet girl has mastered basic commands like sit, stay, wait, and go to your bed, making her an absolute joy to care for. She even knows to let you know when it’s time for a bathroom break! Lilly enjoys leisurely walks and is wonderfully well-behaved on a leash, making every outing a treasured experience. Right now, she is in need of a loving foster home where she can bask in affection and warmth until she can reunite with her beloved mom.

Salem and Infinity

The clock is ticking for Salem and Infinity, two beloved pets who find themselves in a precarious situation while their worried mom anxiously seeks safe housing. The bond they share with her is palpable, and it’s heart-wrenching to think of them waiting in a hot car, longing for comfort and security. Salem, with his charming black and white coat, and Infinity, the lovely gray and white lady, are not just friendly – they’re fantastic companions who thrive on human connection. Having lived with kids and other animals, they are house trained, know basic commands, and are eager to meet new friends, although they may pull on the leash when they spot someone they want to greet! Fostering them isn’t just a temporary solution; it’s a chance to make a meaningful difference in their lives and help keep this family together during a challenging chapter.

Scooby and Domino, and Luc

In a heart-wrenching situation, Scooby and Domino are currently living in a car with their devoted mom and their feline companion, Luc. Their mom is actively participating in a homeless program to secure stable housing, but the urgency of finding a safe and loving foster home for her cherished pets is paramount.

Domino, 7-year-old black lab mix, is not only crate trained but also house and leash trained, making him an ideal companion for someone who can provide the love and comfort he needs. He enjoys swimming and walks, but due to his unfamiliarity with children, we are seeking a home without little ones to ensure his comfort.

Scooby, a sweet 6-year-old Greyhound mix, is also house and leash trained, and has a penchant for long walks and snuggling. Both dogs have never shown aggression, but the transition away from their mom will be challenging for them, and we want to ensure they feel safe and secure during this period. By opening your heart and home to Scooby and/or Domino, you can play a vital role in their journey towards stability.

Luc

Luc is a delightful 3-year-old tuxedo cat whose cheerful spirit radiates warmth and joy, bringing an undeniable light to his family. Picture him basking in the golden rays of sunlight streaming through the window, curling up for cozy naps in his mom’s bed, and playfully vying for attention with his doggy brothers, Domino and Scooby. Luc is not just an inside cat; he’s a loving companion who adores all people and lets everyone know when it’s time for a meal with his endearing MEOW! However, the joyful moments they share are currently overshadowed by the harsh reality of their situation; Luc and his family are in desperate need of a safe haven away from the sweltering heat, as they find themselves living in their car.

Do you love animals and enjoy helping others? Are you a good organizer and multi-tasker? If so, we need you to help coordinate our foster care program! We have foster pets in homes throughout the state and we need help:

  • Transporting animals
  • Picking up pet food and supply donations
  • Matching foster pets with foster homes
  • Ensuring foster families have enough pet food and supplies
  • Additional as-needed assistance
