Grants to Help Pay for Veterinary Costs
It is best to apply to a number of organizations at the same time. It may take a few grants from different organizations to cover the cost of care. Ask the Veterinarian treating your pet to provide you with a written estimate for the total cost of services, and have it EMAILED to you, so you can attach it to the online application of the grantors you have chosen to contact.
For help paying for veterinary bills in New Jersey, individuals can reach out to:

Bow Wow Buddies Foundation
The Bow Wow Buddies Foundation offers a second chance to sick and injured dogs in need by providing medical care funds to dogs who are either homeless or whose parents cannot afford to pay their veterinary bills.
This program provides – Financial assistance for veterinary care up to $2,500
The Bow Wow Buddies Foundation will award grants up for necessary medical treatments for dogs across North America in need of care for conditions such as:
- Broken bones
- Abdominal obstruction
- Enucleation
- Cancer
- Emergency services
Must be unable to afford necessary veterinary care and are in need of financial assistance to keep their dog healthy and in their home.
Grants may not be used for preventative care, spay or neuter surgery, dental cleaning or surgery, ongoing treatments, or end-of-life care. To apply, click here.
After the review, notifications are sent to the applicants to let them know whether their grant request has been approved. Checks for each grant review period are distributed within five business days of the end of the review period and sent directly to the presiding veterinarian.

Frankie’s Friends
Frankie’s Friends provides financial assistance grants to family-owned pets in need of lifesaving emergency or specialty veterinary care whose caregivers cannot afford the full cost of treatment.
Their programs are designed to help with the treatment of emergency and specialty medical conditions where the pet would otherwise suffer, be euthanized, or relinquished without proper veterinary care.
Applications for assistance will be considered if:
- Your pet needs emergency or specialty veterinary care
- Your pet has already been seen by a licensed veterinarian
- The veterinarian has determined your pet has a good prognosis with treatment
- You can show documentation of financial need
- And the treatment plan has not yet been paid, as they do not reimburse for any payments already made

Onyx & Breezy Foundation
The Onyx & Breezy Foundation provides funding and support to:
- Food, medicine and supplies
- Pets of individuals where medical hardship is present
- Helping the dogs of veterans suffering from PTSD

Pet Fund
The Pet Fund works only on non-basic, non-urgent care. This category includes medical needs such as cancer treatment, heart disease, chronic conditions, endocrine diseases, eye diseases, etc. To apply, click here. RedRover Relief: Urgent Care Grants
The RedRover Relief Urgent Care grant program provides financial aid to pets in need of critical veterinary care. Grant decisions are based on medical urgency, financial need, available funding, and eligibility. To apply, click here.
Grants for Emergency and Transitional Pet Shelters

Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime: Emergency & Transitional Pet Shelter & Housing Assistance
Grants for shelter, transitional housing, and other assistance to survivors of domestic violence and their companion animals. 5 awards of up to $500,000 each for a 36 month period.

AKC Humane Fund: Women’s Shelters Grant
Grants up to $15,000 to support programs that help pets of domestic violence survivors with care and temporary shelter on site at domestic violence shelters.

RedRover: Safe Escape Grant
Offers assistance to help support animals displaced by family violence. Grants pay to temporary boarding and/or veterinary care while a survivor is seeking shelter.

RedRover: Safe Housing Grant
Grants up to $60,000 to fund the development of pet-friendly programs in domestic violence shelters and animal welfare organizations. Funds may also be used for veterinary care and pet deposits.

Greater Good Charities: Rescue Rebuild
Grants to create pet-friendly spaces at domestic violence shelters to keep survivors and their pets together.

Whole Families Program
Do you qualify?
People for Animals believes that Pets are Family! Our Whole Families Program seeks to keep whole families together by solving social challenges that threaten the unity of low-income, animal-inclusive families. The WFP will provide: free social services assistance, affordable preventative veterinary care for pets, and long term planning to ensure the continuing health and happiness of the whole family.
To qualify for enrollment in WFP, families:
- Must include at least one pet (dog or cat) to which your family is bonded and considers as a family member.
- Must be experiencing a crisis such as: homelessness, domestic violence, and/or is entering a transitional shelter, rehabilitation facility or hospital.
- Must either be receiving benefits from – or qualify for – at least one public assistance program which requires income qualification, including:

- NJ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program or the NJ Supplementary Food Stamp Program
- Supplemental Security Income Program
- WIC special supplemental food program for women, infants and children
- Work First New Jersey program
- Medicaid
- Senior Gold Prescription Discount Program
- Section 8 rental assistance
- Lifeline Credit Program
- Tenants’ Lifeline Assistance Program
- LIHEAP the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
- Other means-tested benefits
Benefits of enrollment:
- Personalized social services networking assistance and ongoing support, budget instruction, etc.
- Short-term foster care or boarding (only for pets) while their pet parent is residing in a shelter or treatment program that does not include animals.
- Fifty-percent discounted preventative care at PFA, including:
- Routine office visit fees
- Vaccinations
- Microchips
- Routine 4Dx or Triple test annually
- Fecal tests
- Dewormer
- Flea/tick preventatives
- Heartworm preventatives
