Sweet Pea Fund
Our donor-supported Sweet Pea Fund provides life-saving care to animals and their families, experiencing medical and financial emergencies.
Sweet Pea's story
Inspired by the sweet senior dog who did not let her past damper her capacity for love and now provides a life-saving legacy to other animals.

Sweet Pea, moments after we rescued her.
It began when a shelter alerted us to an elderly dog, who was incontinent, unable to walk, and scheduled for euthanasia… and still wasn’t afraid to show love. Jane, our compassionate Executive Director, encountered this terrified terrier mix, homeless and without a name. As Jane approached the cage she said, “Hi Sweet Pea,” and this poor bewildered girl lifted her head. Jane knew that PFA had to rescue her. Unable to walk, this girl – who we named Sweet Pea – was gently carried outside, where she was so relieved to be out, that she managed a few steps on her own.
Sweet Pea was taken for a full medical evaluation and sadly diagnosed with a large, inoperable abdominal tumor, but that made us more determined to give her care, for as long as she needed it. Caroline, our hospice foster mom, stepped right up and took Sweet Pea home with her, ready and willing to make her last few months as comfortable as possible.
Sweet Pea was relaxed and contented in her hospice home and quickly caught the eye of Macho, a Jack Russell mix who was also being provided with hospice care. The two became fast friends laying and cuddling together at every chance!

Sweet Pea thankfully enjoyed four months of a loving, happy home with Macho and Caroline until she was ready to cross the rainbow bridge; Macho joined his friend shortly thereafter.
Sweet Pea did not let her past damper her capacity for love and her resolve inspired us to establish the Sweet Pea Fund, which allows for PFA to help families who are suffering from financial hardship and faced with a veterinary emergency. Because all families, no matter their economic disadvantages, deserve quality care. Through the Sweet Pea Fund, struggling families have up to 100% of their pet’s life-saving medical costs covered by People For Animals.
We need your help to continue to provide love and care for animals like Sweet Pea and Macho. With your support, Sweet Pea’s legacy can shine brighter than ever.
