PFA’s Whole Families Program aims to achieve the noble goal of keeping families together by aiding a pet’s human companions when they are experiencing a crisis. 

The worth of this endeavor can be found in the solace we provided to a very special duo.  Smeagol, a 15-year-old Pomeranian, and his human, “A,” have comforted each other through difficult times: Smeagol has congestive heart failure and a murmur, while “A” suffers from neurological, mobility, and breathing problems. 

“A” does not have family support and lost her apartment last year; she’s worked with a lawyer to contest the denial of her Disability claim, but as a result of these difficulties, the pair were forced to live in her car (which broke down at the start of the year).  “A” rescued Smeagol when he was already a senior, and the love she feels for him is palpable:

“Smeagol is my family. He is a chronically-ill senior with his own individual set of personality traits and idiosyncrasies. But in short, he is a very strong, loyal, loving, and very spunky little guy. He’s very smart and well-behaved — wise even, LOL. He is fluffy and smells great too — I love his scent. We have tamed each other and I just hope that I can be there for him until his very last day.”

When we enrolled them into the Whole Families Program, “A” was concerned about food for herself, but was really worried about Smeagol’s compounded heart medication, which he needs daily.  Our team began helping “A” in her search for a clean, affordable permanent residence, while Smeagol received discounted veterinary care at our clinic.

We were then blessed by the charity of one of our long-term supporters, Christopher, who owns a compounding pharmacy business. He presented a gift card for “A” so she could purchase and enjoy some ready-made meals!  Then he utilized his business connections, advocated on PFA’s behalf, and was able to secure free medicine for Smeagol – permanently!  We’re so touched by Christopher’s selflessness for two neighbors he never met.  This is the power of the PFA community coming together to lift up our neighbors in need!

The good news continued in the spring when we finally found a new apartment for the two, and provided “A” with air purifier equipment so she could live comfortably.  Meanwhile, Smeagol continues to receive regular vet care with PFA.  “A” wanted to share that: “People for Animals has helped us stay together through very difficult times.  The facility has really been a godsend. Helped my little senior when he needed it most.”
